(registered 2023-09-11, last updated 2023-09-11) Media type name: application Media subtype name: vnd.relpipe Required parameters: N/A Optional parameters: N/A Encoding considerations: binary Security considerations: This media type contains no executable content, just data. Because it may contain any data (generic format), it may also contain sensitive data. It is up to the user to secure the message on the protocol or container level (TLS, S/MIME, GPG etc.) when needed. Primary use of this format is IPC (inter-process communication) on a local machine, between two processes, mostly owned by the same user. However data in this format may be transferred also over e.g. HTTP(S) or e-mail, so having a Media type is desired. Regarding DoS: data in this binary format contain length-prefixed values, thus corrupted/malicious data + buggy implementation can lead to attempt to allocate huge amounts of memory. However this caveat is common for almost any binary format. Interoperability considerations: Data in this format have same representation regardless platform operating system, default encoding, endianness, CPU architecture etc. Text attributes are serialized in UTF-8 regardless local default encoding. Integer numbers are serialized as LEB128. Booleans are simply 0x00/0x01. Other data types will be also strictly machine-readable and platform independent. Published specification: https://relational-pipes.globalcode.info/v_0/specification.xhtml (not final yet) Applications which use this media: - IPC (inter-process communication) between two processes running on a single machine or over network e.g. piped through SSH (Media type is not needed in this case) - HTTP request and response bodies - MIME e-mail attachments - extended attributes (xattr) file metadata on a file system - storage in a container format or a database that records also Media type of stored data Fragment identifier considerations: currently no defined syntax, reserved for further use Restrictions on usage: not explicitly intended for limited use Additional information: 1.
